Overview of Research Work

Over the years, my research has been generally focusing on the understanding of activities which include modeling, sensing, recognition, and measuring of activities in different domains, and on different levels.

One of my main research topics is understanding, modeling, and measuring the complex, collective software development activities in open source software (OSS) projects and ecosystems that involve thousands of developers from the globe, and over the internet. We have developed metrics to measure the evolution of social communities in OSS projects [FSE 2022], and to measure the diversity of OSS projects’ forks [ASE 2023]. We also study incentive approaches, such as sponsoring [CompSac 2022a], to motivate more contributors to make active contributions. I am one of the co-founders of the OSS Compass (https://oss-compass.org/) community that aims at measuring the health of OSS ecosystems. Please refer to the publications marked with the green color in this series.

Another field that collective intelligence emerges is large swarms of unmanned vehicles. In this field, our have been working on technologies that enable the intelligent collaboration of large swarms of UAVs to achieve complex task goals autonomously, such as path finding, search and rescue, etc, using technologies including reinforcement learning, and machine learning, etc. Please refer to the publications marked with the blue color.

Before I start my research on collective intelligence of human, OSS developers, and UAVs, my research has been focusing on the sensing and recognition of a single and multiple human subjects’ activities in smart spaces, using wearable and ambient sensors. Publications marked with the gray color are about this topic.

Behind the physical activities, it is the mind and emotions that drive our behaviors. Some of my research focus on the sensing, and detection of mental activities, i.e., mental workloads, emotions, flow states, during the learning, development and use of computer programmers. Publications related to this topic are marked as orange.

There are also a few publications marked by the yellow color, which are general technologies, such as time series analysis technologies, we developed during the research in the above domains.
